Critical thinking and metacognitive reflection for GenAI

In recent Jinfo community sessions, subscribers have repeatedly returned to the question of how information professionals can sharpen their thinking when working with GenAI tools.

Our new report "Critical-thinking skills for GenAI" highlights its importance in business research and provides practical guidance.

Drawing on community discussion and expert commentary, the report proposes a five-step framework for GenAI use:

  1. Begin with a broad prompt
  2. Apply metacognitive reflection
  3. Progressively refine the prompt
  4. Anticipate clarifying questions GenAI might ask
  5. Rigorously evaluate outputs.

This approach helps ensure AI-generated content is validated, contextually appropriate, and suitable for stakeholders.

We have also recorded a Jinfo Webinar on critical-thinking skills, which details the necessary steps to improve critical thinking, and the practical actions for information teams.

In researching the topic of critical thinking, we also explored the concept of metacognitive reflection. This is therefore the subject of another new report, "Why is metacognitive reflection so important when using AI?".

Building negotiation skills

Skill-building doesn't end with technology.

Have you been in a negotiation where a vendor is trying to restructure your licence, or raise prices after a change of ownership?

Following our successful "Contract negotiation clinic" session, this month will offer live negotiation role-play scenarios:

Experienced vendor negotiator, Dan McGovern, will act as both vendor counterpart and coach, whilst two of our active community members will act in their normal role as information managers.

Participants will strengthen their ability to manage vendor conversations, another essential skill in today's information landscape.

And if you missed it, check out the recent Jinfo report "Improve outcomes from your vendor negotiations", which has had an incredible response.

"Due diligence and integrity research – expanding the role of information managers"

22nd October 2025

Jinfo Community

New legislation is accelerating the demand for business intelligence and background screening.

As a result, and more than ever before, organisations are being forced to conduct deeper due diligence on clients, suppliers, and partners.

Therefore, information managers' skills – in research, product knowledge, data access, and analytical expertise – play a vital role in developing their organisation's compliance work.

Whether you're new to due diligence, or looking to enhance established processes, Dermot Corrigan, CEO of SmartKYC, will discuss real-world approaches, and common pitfalls associated with this work.
